New ComD 15

New ComD 15

Research and analyze the current ComD 15 typefaces listed in the previous page (according to the following process), and then suggest a new set of typefaces that should either replace the current ComD 15 typefaces or be added to the list. Pick one of the new typeface you selected, write an essay about the typeface and design a Zine for it. Please remember to document the entire process in the process book according to its format.

Step 1: Research and Analyze the Current ComD 15 Typefaces

You need to describe your initial observations and thoughts about the current ComD 15 typefaces. You should then begin researching and analyzing the 15 typefaces. Take into account values such as; place of origin, foundry, designer, purpose, function, form, and so on. Begin by implementing LATC theory to your collection: how might the concept of Location or Time, for example, be applied to them? Location might relate to place of manufacture or the specific site where the typeface was designed. Time could relate to when it was designed or period of time when the typeface was popular. Organize your research and present it in visual form.

Step 2: Suggest five new typefaces that should be added to the current ComD 15 typefaces.

Based on your research and analysis, please recommend five new typefaces that should be added to (or replace) the current ComD 15 typefaces. For example, you may recommend to add Scala because you think it is important to have a neohumanist text typeface (which comes with san serif) in our design pallet. Conversely you may also recommend contemporary decorative typefaces that are missing from the current list, or perhaps you may argue that Didot is better than Bodoni.

Present each new typeface on tabloid sized paper with clear a description of why it should be added to the list. Through the class discussion and voting, we’ll select 16 new typefaces to be added to the the ComD typeface list. You will be assigned one typeface from the selected list (hopefully one you have recommended) to work with.

Step 3: Write an essay about your typeface.

Thoroughly research and analyze your typeface according to the same process as you have researched and analyze the current ComD 15 typefaces. Write a short essay (about 750 to 1,000 words) to recommend the typeface. You may write about its place of origin, foundry, designer, purpose, function, form, style and so on. Clearly state why it should make the list. Please place close attention to the inernal structure of your essay to both recommend the typeface and give design structure to the layout you will create in step 4.

Step 4: Design a Zine

Design a zine with your essay. Visualize the key points of your essay with photographs, illustration, infographics, typography and so on. You may add quotes, captions, footnotes, bibliography and so on. Design format will be discussed.
